Welcome to my BLOG
where I will be posting the latest news about RECAMBERING (the Technical and Tonal Optimisation of bows)
and answering any questions you may have about it.
After opening my new studio recently, my first customer brought me
some interesting bows, to have their camber adjusted; here’s one of them…
Yes…it’s a very beautiful Nicolas Maire violin bow
My client was in two minds about buying it-from one of the UK’s most well-known dealers. This bow produces an exceptionally rich sound, full of colours and is in near-mint condition. However, my client found it rather awkward to play and in a few areas, the sound lacked presence.
I took a close look at the camber and found it to be quite unbalanced. This is a very common occurrence in antique bows. After I assured my client that this could be corrected, he went ahead and purchased the bow.
What was the result after the camber restoration?
The difficulties disappeared and the bow became much easier to play. This is not magic, but the experience and underderstanding gained through many years of camber restoration to antique master bows; bows which have been made by some of the greatest makers in history, yet were not in optimal playing condition.
That’s it for today. If you have any questions about your antique bow, feel free to ask and I will be happy to give you my thoughts about it… just write to me at:
